Cloud security with Dropbox

Safe, secure cloud storage for all your files and folders

Secure cloud storage
What is cloud security?

Cloud computing security—or “cloud security”—is a set of policies, technology, software, and apps that protect personal and professional data stored online in the cloud.

Cloud data security and protection apply the rigor of on-premises data centers, securing your cloud infrastructure without the hardware maintenance costs.

Cloud computing simplifies IT management with software and apps to remotely control and monitor data in the cloud environment. Plus, the right cloud provider also makes it easy for teams and organizations to securely store data and scale quickly.

Protecting data over the cloud
How secure cloud storage works

Cloud providers and cloud storage services use a network of connected secure data centers to store and process your online data. Every cloud solution employs models that can be customized to user needs.

What are the three most commonly used cloud types?

Public clouds

Public clouds

Cloud resources such as hardware, storage, and network devices are owned and operated by a third-party cloud service provider and delivered through the web.

Private clouds

Private clouds

Private clouds are used exclusively by one organization and can be physically located in an on-premises data center or hosted by a third-party cloud service provider.

Hybrid clouds

Hybrid clouds

This solution combines a private cloud with a public cloud. In a hybrid cloud, data and applications can move between private and public clouds for greater flexibility and more deployment options.

Is Dropbox safe?

Dropbox makes cloud data protection its top priority—we use multiple layers of protection across a distributed, reliable cloud infrastructure. So whether you’re an individual or team, our cloud security solutions provide the same standard of protection to all your online data.

This means individuals can confidently use our secure cloud to store files, share documents, and request access. Additionally, organizations can feel secure that our enterprise-grade encrypted cloud storage supports our customer’s compliance requirements and follows data security policies of business and international regulations, such as the GDPR and HIPAA.

Safe, secure request access
Encrypted cloud storage keeps your files secure

Dropbox files at rest are encrypted using 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) to protect your sensitive data against brute-force attacks, ransomware, malware, and data breaches.

Dropbox uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)/Transport Layer Security (TLS) to protect data in transit between Dropbox apps and our servers. These create a secure tunnel, protected by 128-bit or higher Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) encryption.

Your privacy remains intact

We’ll always clearly describe when and why we’re collecting your information, as well as the steps we take to protect it. We won’t sell your information to advertisers or third-parties.

Your account is kept safe

We use two-factor authentication to limit unauthorized access, and give you best-in-class admin security and access controls to monitor account activity.

Frequently asked questions

Cloud storage stores your files, folder and data safely and securely in the cloud. This means all of your data is stored offsite, usually in warehouses, in secure locations. Files, folders, and data stored in cloud storage is encrypted too, making it far harder for cybercriminals to access.

These factors ensure cloud storage is secure, and a safe place to store the files that matter to you.

Yes. Dropbox files at rest are encrypted using 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). In fact, Dropbox is designed with multiple layers of protection to keep your files secure, above and beyond this encryption.
